Nueva Ley en Illinois Intenta Proteger a Ciclistas
A partir del 1ro de Enero del 2011, conductores del estado de Illinois se enfrentaran a penalidades más arduas por aglomerarse junto y seguir de cerca a los ciclistas. Un conductor que hiera seriamente a un ciclista podría enfrentarse a dos a cinco años en prisión más fianzas de hasta $25,000.00. Como abogado de lesiones persóneles en la ciudad de Chicago y un ávido ciclista, reconozco cuan peligroso es manejar bicicleta en la ciudad de Chicago, aun sin los motoristas que suelen manejar y seguir muy de cerca a los ciclistas. En el verano del 2010 hubo muchas historias terribles para ciclistas en las que conductores enfuriados intencionalmente conducían cerca de ciclistas y en algunos casos los embestían intencionalmente. La nueva ley es un primer paso hacia la protección de ciclistas. De hecho, lo que es necesario son ciclo vías por separado, como las hay en otras ciudades como Portland, Oregón, en las cuales los autos no puedan traspasar. Yo he visto hasta autos de policía conducir sobre las ciclo vías que la ciudad de Chicago a pintado al costado de las calles, al igual que taxis y todos otros vehículos, creando muchas oportunidades para causar colisiones con ciclistas. Cuando hay un choque entre un ciclista y un motorista, nunca hay un concurso, el ciclista siempre pierde.
