If the alien is abroad, or is not eligible for adjustment of status, the alien may apply for an immigrant visa at a U.S. consulate abroad once the alien's priority date is current. If the alien obtains the immigrant visa, the alien becomes a permanent resident when he or she travels to the U.S. with the immigrant visa and is admitted by an immigration inspector.
